How much rubber matting do I need?
Measure the length and width of your space, then multiply them to find its area. Add your waste allowance and choose your matting. The calculator works out whole mats or tiles, or a combination of rubber rolls and a cut length.
For rubber matting, full rolls and roll-plus-cut options are compared after automatic discounts. Cuts are proposed only when they cost less; equal prices favour full rolls. Mats, tiles and grass mat rolls use whole-unit quantities. Choose an exact product to check its dimensions, current discounts, image and estimated price.
- Measure your area. Use metres, centimetres, millimetres, feet, inches or yards. For an irregular space, split it into rectangles.
- Choose your matting. Select the product type and the exact product or variant. Both are required so the calculator can show its image, price and correct basket quantities.
- Allow for waste. Select 0%, 5%, 10% or 15% depending on the cuts and edges you expect.
- Review your result. Check the breakdown and use Add to basket. Mixed roll-and-cut selections are added together; single-product results also have a View product link.
The coverage formulas explained
Floor area
Length × width = area in m²
Convert both measurements to metres first. A 5m × 4m space covers 20m².
Mats and tiles
Area including waste ÷ unit area
Unit area is the mat or tile width multiplied by its length. Round up to a whole mat or tile.
Rubber rolls and cuts
Area including waste ÷ product width
Compare enough full rolls against rolls plus an available matching cut. The calculator checks automatic discounts and proposes a cut only when it gives a lower product total.
Square metres are not the same as linear metres. A 1m length of 1.2m-wide matting covers 1.2m². The same length of 1.4m-wide matting covers 1.4m².
For imperial measurements, 1ft = 0.3048m, 1in = 0.0254m and 1yd = 0.9144m. The calculator handles these conversions and shows relevant imperial equivalents beside the metric result.

The final example shows why the exact product matters. Nominal 0.5m tiles and actual 0.49m tiles do not cover the same area. Selecting a specific product updates the calculator to its published dimensions.

These are the calculator's starting sizes. An exact product selection takes precedence: for example, selected gym mats may measure 0.91m × 0.91m. Product suitability, thickness, installation requirements and availability should be checked on the product page.
Waste allowance and planning your layout
The calculator starts at 5% waste. You can choose no extra for an exact-area estimate, 10% for a more complex shape or 15% for an irregular shape. Waste is applied to the unrounded area before the final number of mats, tiles or rolls is rounded up.
A coverage estimate does not decide where each cut or join will fall. Sketch the layout, consider roll direction and check whether offcuts can be reused. If the space has many obstacles or the result is close to a product or pack boundary, ask RMO for help with your matting requirement.

How do I calculate how much rubber matting I need?
Multiply your area length by its width and add your waste allowance. Mats, tiles and grass mat rolls are rounded up to whole units. For rubber matting, the calculator compares full rolls with matching roll-and-cut combinations using current automatic discounts. A cut is proposed only when its total is lower; equal prices favour full rolls. Selecting an exact product uses its catalogue dimensions and available cut lengths.
How many grass mats do I need for a 5m by 5m area?
A 5m by 5m area is 25m². Each 1m by 1.5m grass mat covers 1.5m², so the base estimate is 17 whole mats. With 5% waste, the target area is 26.25m² and the estimate becomes 18 mats. Check the cutting layout before ordering.
What is the difference between square metres and linear metres?
Square metres measure area. Linear metres measure length along a roll of a particular width. One linear metre of a 1.2m-wide roll covers 1.2m². A 13m requirement can be supplied as one 10m roll plus a 3m cut; the calculator proposes that combination only when it saves money after automatic discounts. With 5% waste, 13m becomes 13.65m and any cut must cover at least the 3.65m remainder.
Can I enter feet, inches or yards instead of metres?
Yes. Choose metres, centimetres, millimetres, feet, inches or yards. Switching units converts measurements you have already entered. Results show metric coverage and relevant feet or square-feet equivalents. One foot is exactly 0.3048m, one inch is 0.0254m and one yard is 0.9144m.
How much extra matting should I allow for waste?
The calculator offers no extra allowance, 5%, 10% or 15%. Start with 5% for a straightforward project, and consider a larger allowance where there are more cuts or irregular edges. These are planning allowances, not a guarantee that every cutting layout will fit. Waste is added to the area before the final quantity is rounded up.
Which product dimensions does the calculator use?
An exact product and option must be selected before calculating. The result uses that product’s actual catalogue dimensions rather than the nominal size in the product-type label. For example, a tile described as approximately 0.5m may be listed at 0.49m, which means more tiles are needed for the same area. Check the selected product size and quantity before ordering.
Does the calculator account for awkward shapes, joins and cutting patterns?
It is an area-based estimator, not a cutting-layout optimiser. For an L-shaped space, split the floor into rectangles, calculate each section and consider how cuts and offcuts can be used. Columns, borders, interlocking edges and roll orientation can change the quantity you need.
How do I add the calculated quantities to my basket?
Choose an exact product or variant and calculate coverage. Current automatic discounts are checked before a buying option is displayed. A single-product result has View product and Add to basket buttons. For a mixed result, Add calculated items to basket adds both matched items together. Prices, stock and variants are rechecked before adding. Delivery and manual coupon codes are confirmed in the basket.
Can I compare different mats and their estimated costs?
